As per the previous post and the challenge laid down by dogeardiscs, I have decided to try and get through the following categories/books. Ive plumped for 12 as I can see some logic in one a month (and it will give me a bit of time to get some reading outside of the categories). Some are only tentatively linked to the categories, but hey its my list and I’ll do what I want with it…

1.Crime/Mystery – Redbreast by Jo Nesbo
2.Thriller – Before I go to Sleep by S J Watson
3.Romance – The Marriage plot by Jeffery Eugenides
4.Sci-Fi – The Blackhouse by Peter May (Im not sure how this is Sci Fi, but Amazon says so….)
5.Non-Fiction – The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
6.Young Adult – Shelter by Harlan Coben
7.Historical Fiction – 11.22.63 by Stephen King (what?!? 1963 is historical….)
8.Comedy/Light– Cocunut Unlimited by Nikesh Shulka
9. Horror – 77 Shadow Street by Dean Koontz
10.Noir – Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis
11.Drama – Room by Emma Donoghue
12.Classic – The Moonstone by Wilke Collins

To kick things off, Im starting with “Before I go to Sleep”.  Following that, I’ll see where the mood takes me….

2012, here I come..

Posted: January 1, 2012 in Uncategorized

Wow, I almost forgot this blog even existed it’s been so long since I posted anything. Well seeing as it’s a new year I thought Id start it back up again. I’m not going to even attempt the One a day challenge, but will just post my rubbish whenever I feel up to it.

To start off with though, and in lieu of any “real” new year resolutions, I’m going to post later a list of the books/movies/other things I want to get through this year. And to give me some impetus with the books Im going to have a go at dogeardiscs “Around the stack” challenge ( http://dogeardiscs.wordpress.com/2011/12/06/around-the-stack-in-how-many-ways-a-2012-book-challenge/).

So this blog will become a place to park my thoughts on the books chosen, and also any other nonsense I feel like.

Probably mostly nonsense.

Following a few days with a sickness bug, a few days working ridiculous hours, and a few more days of not being arsed, I return to the blog with a few more Great Soundtracks/Themes from Movies (that may or may not be great).  Oneaday is totally shot to hell, so Ill just post as and when I can be arsed.

Ciao.

Batman and Robin

I could spout on about how utterly shit this film is, but I think the highlights of an IMDB review below sum it up quite nicely:

“This is hands down the worst film ever made in the history of the existence of the universe. There have been some bad films made but this is a travesty. It is hard to believe that money was spent to make this. It could have been used on something else (charity I suppose). …..The excellence of the Tim Burton/Michael Keaton films are long gone. The dark emotional center and development of the hero and the villains is sidelined for action sequences, action sequences and some more action sequences, some of them incorporating the worst CGI and model work ever seen on film. The casting itself had to the potential to make a good film. George Clooney could have made a great Batman ….Uma Thurman is perfect for Poison Ivy…. Arnie is maybe a little miscast as Mr Freeze, but he does well getting a chance to use some ‘great’ puns, but someone who can come across as more evil would have been better. Then there is Chris O’Donnell and Alicia Silverstone as Robin and Batgirl. Let’s just say more charisma can come from a line of fridge freezers with nothing in them. The only decent performance comes from Michael Gough as Alfred, only one of two actors to have appeared in all four films. His performance is wonderful in this otherwise mess of a film. The blame for this disaster can be laid at the hands of Joel Schumacher.”

The film did have a good soundtrack though, with a few great songs from the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins, REM and Jewel.  The underworld song “Moaner” was a sort of unofficial theme tune and a hell of a lot better than the “Born Slippy” shite that they included in the Trainspotting Soundtrack..

The Outsiders

Much better than the other Rob Lowe/Patrick Swayze film, “The Outsiders” is bloody marvellous. I mean, just look at the cast – C Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise – its the 80s “brat pack” at their best. With a great Stevie Wonder track to boot.

Hard Boiled

John Woo shows what he can do in this excellent Chow Yun-Fat-Kicking-Fucking-Arse Film.  The music is great too.

Broken Arrow

And then here we have John Woo showing us that a big budget and a Scientologist do not a great movie make.  But the music is pretty cool.

Escape to Victory

Sly proves once and for all that unless he’s got a pair of boxing gloves or a big fuckoff gun, he’s pretty useless.  And he’s shit in goal. Bill Conti’s theme, however, is excellent

Revenge of the Nerds

Aye, I know this isnt the “theme” (the theme is actually pretty shite..), but the nerds live performance towards the end of the movie almost makes you want to be Booger.

The Big Blue

Any Luc Besson film with Jean Reno is awesome.  Fact.  Most Eric Serra soundtracks are awesome, another sort-of-fact.  The Big Blue certainly is..

The Protector

An early attempt by Jackie Chan at making an American movie, and a much better effort than any of the recent pish that has been out, The Protector is a manly movie with a manly theme.

King Solomons Mines

Ok, any Jerry Goldsmith score is going to be awesome but this deserves special mention as King Solomons Mines is utter, utter, shite. Apart from being a blatant Indy rip off, it proves once again that any film with Sharon Stone in it where she doesnt get her tits out isnt worth watching.

American Ninja / Red Dawn

Posted together as both films are proof that the eighties really does have a lot to answer for, and both themes scream “America, Fuck Yeah!”.

The film

From the imdb synopsis: When they took the wrong turn, it lead them to witnessing a murder, which left them running for their lives from the perpetrators.

An American Werewolf in London taught us that if you don’t stick to the roads when on the Yorkshire Moors, you’re basically fucked.  Judgment Night similarly tells us we’re fucked if we stray from the main roads in Chicago. Except instead of a werewolf, it’s a psychopathic Denis Leary that will be hunting us down. A-SS-HO-LE.

The Music

A brilliant compilation of rap/rock songs, the soundtrack is great.  This collaboration between Faith No More and Boo Yaa Tribe is definitely the standout track though..

Unless you have been hiding under a rock for the last few days, you will have seen the coverage of Andy Gray and Richard Keys’ shocking sexist remarks towards a female linesman. Now, Andy Gray has been sacked upon the discovery of more sexist comments and Keys remains suspended (along with another reporter for describing her as that most offensive of things – “a bit of alright”). Shocking behaviour, its like being back in the 1950′s.

I am a bit surpised at Andy Gray’s comments, but it hasn’t really come as a shock from Gor Richard Keys, I mean he’s been described as a “bit of an ape” for years.

Anyways, I think it is truly shocking that this type of sexism appears to still be rife in today’s society. A female referee should get the same respect as a male referee – instead of questioning her knowledge of the offside rule, we should be calling her a wanker and threatening to smash her windows in. The ‘lets kick racism out of football’ campaign appeared to be succesful – let’s have a ‘lets kick sexism out’ drive and then women will finally get the respect they deserve on and off the pitch.

And then we can all enjoy scenes like these:

The nominations for this years Bafta awards were announced a few days ago, and the best actor award is obviously going to go to either Colin Firth or James Franco for their roles in “The Kings Speech” and “127 Hours” respectively. Who will win though? This head to head will show us..

(may contain what would normally be regarded as ‘spoilers’, but everyone already knows both films endings so I’m not sure that there is much to spoil.. )

Round 1 – Characters Challenge to overcome

Firth – needs to beat a stammer to make a speech, and gain respect of his people

Franco – needs to drink his own pish and cut off his arm with a blunt knife to survive

Round Winner – Franco

Round 2 – Character’s Love interest

Firth – married to the obviously-filthy-but-still-gorgeous-no-matter-what-crazy-shit-she-is-wearing Helena Bonham Carter.

Franco – eventually gets married, but on the way passes up on a great opportunity to go skinny dipping and potentially having a threesome in a canyon

Round Winner – Firth

Round 3 – Previous work

Firth – used to be Mr Darcy

Franco – used to be The Green Goblin

Round winner – Franco

Round 4 – Film buddy

Firth – the fantastic James Woods Geoffrey Rush

Franco – himself and his video camera

Round winner – Firth

Final round – Potential award speech

Firth – could accept the award in character and give the longest and most uncomfortable speech ever

Franco – could accept the award in character and give the most obnoxious, self congratulating speech ever

Draw

In the event of a tie after five rounds, the Academy move to a final elimination round

Final Elimination Round – Nationality

 Firth – British

Franco – Not British

Overall Winner – Colin Firth

So, there you have it – conclusive proof that this years Bafta award for best actor will go to Colin Firth. Not that it really matters, this is all just rehearsals for the Oscars anyway..
